100 Lot Contemporary Handmade Art Drawings NEW Wall Art Home Décor Work on Paper was presented at Macaulay & Co. Fine Art, Vancouver, in 2018.
100 Lot Contemporary… was an installation of one hundred colored pencil drawings, each depicting an item (or group of items) for sale on e-commerce website eBay.com.
The work was a remake of a past project, eBay Photographic Archive Circa 2005, for which I sought to preserve a disappearing genre of vernacular photography: “Amateur Digital Product Photography Circa 2005.” For one year, I collected images posted online by eBay users selling personal items and presented them as an installation of archival prints.
The new work took a closer look at the amateur photographer behind the user-generated aesthetic. By switching mediums from photography to drawing, I referenced “Colored Pencil Art,” an amateur art genre with a devoted online community. I draw a parallel between myself as an amateur “colored pencil artist” to the amateur eBay photographer, whose often-sophisticated aesthetic discloses itself through unplanned compositional elements: juxtaposition, repetition, or the photographer’s own body parts.
